Australian National Billiards Championship Report
Steve Mifsud has won his sixth Australian National Billiards Championship by defeating Rod Nelson 2022 - 406 in the final at Yarraville. Steve dominated the five-hour match averaging a world class 44 per visit and making breaks of 168, 139, 131, 152, 127 and consecutive breaks of 262 and 224.
Steve won his way into the final by defeating Neil Maclachlan 641 (118, 271) - 329 (91), Dave Cosgriff 1242 (262, 242, 150) - 240 in the quarter final and Josh Burns 868 (179, 105) - 668 in the semifinal.
During the championship Steve compiled a total of 16 centuries, 6 double centuries and the championship high break of 306.
Rod Nelson from Victoria made his way into his first Australian National final by defeating Australia’s number 2 ranked player Michael Pearson (NSW) 715 (173, 116) - 572 (140) in the semifinal. Rod was in great form in the earlier rounds of the finals knockout having made breaks of 178, 174 and 131 in his win against Simon Scerri and consecutive breaks of 102, 136 and 109 against Don Richter. Rod made a total of ten centuries during the championship but was not able to match the scoring power of Steve in the final.
A highlight of the event was the emergence of 19 year old Jayden Dinga from Queensland who made breaks of 146 and 102. Jayden also earlier in the week compiled a break of 181 during the Walter Lindrum Australian Open Billiards.
