Some very sad, though not unexpected, news. Ron Stecum passed away in a Cranbourne Nursing home yesterday afternoon, surrounded by family. He was 98.
Ron was President of the VBSA (1978 to 1982 & 1986 to 1988) and the Australian Billiards & Snooker Referees Association, travelling internationally to referee. He was made a VBSA Life member in mid 1990’s.
Ron was also a member at Frankston RSL Billiards & Snooker Section since mid-1990’s; was President from 1999 to 2006, and numerous other positions after that; and was made a Life Member in 2017. He was also an RACV member prior to that for many years.
Ron was still playing competition billiards & snooker into his early 90’s and it’s no surprise to learn he was a very good player in his prime, breaking over 100 in both billiards & snooker. He was also one of the very few remaining people who actually saw, and played against in an exhibition match, the legendary Walter Lindrum.
A commemorative function is being planned at Frankston RSL in the next few weeks; details to follow. No formal funeral will be held.
The VBSA extends its deepest sympathies to Ron's wife, Val, and family.
