Australian Masters Snooker 2024 Wrap Up

After 4 exciting days of snooker, a new but familiar champion has emerged with Glen Wilkinson (Sydney) taking out the Australian Masters Snooker Championship and lifting the incredible Max Williams trophy.

The Championship was held from the 2nd to the 5th of May at the Mingara Recreation Club on the Central Coast in NSW. This has been the 15th year that the Australian Masters Snooker Championship has been held at Mingara. The ABSC together with Mingara are extremely proud to have been able to achieve this milestone and firmly establishing Mingara as one of our Sport’s most popular venues in Australia.

The final match was best of 7 frames between Glen Wilkinson and David Wright who both reside in Sydney, NSW. Glen was able to overcome an in-form David and win the final 4-0. However, the end score didn’t not reflect the closeness of the match with some frames going down to the final double black. Glen had good wins over Robert Elsley (3-2) and Greg Jenkins (4-0) from the quarter finals to secure his spot in the final. David was solid all week and had wins over Paul Thomerson (3-0) and Steve Jay (4-1) to get to the final.

Congratulations Glen on yet another Championship under your belt, you are a true Masters Champion in Australian Snooker history.

The ABSC would like to thank players, officials and all the local visitors and members for their support of this event. The atmosphere was great and with a total of 61 entries this year (including 11 from inter-state), it has set a precedent for years to come as we work with Mingara to return the event for 2025.

We would like to acknowledge our major sponsor CL&S and the event sponsor Mingara Recreation Club.  Thank you to the Board of Directors, management & staff for their fantastic support in staging the Australian Masters and also their on-going support and assistance provided to the Sport of Snooker & Billiards in the region.

For this event we also had 5 businesses that each sponsored one of the tables. Thank you to Guzman Y Gomez, Radar Results, Premier Services Group, Stone Real Estate and the Snooker Shop for their support. The highest break of 94 of the Championship was made on table 5 by Roger Farebrother. Therefore, the Snooker Shop was the winner of the cash prize.

Thank you to the highly valued assistance of all 7 Referees who took part throughout the Championship.  It’s a big commitment over the 4 days of the event, which comprised a total of 123 games (304 frames) and a very special ‘thank you’ to all who officiated.

A special mention to Danny Townsend for the way in which all tables have been presented and maintained for play.  An excellent job (as always) and the Mingara tables continue to be some of the best in the country.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge the efforts of the Mingara Snooker and Billiards Club committee for their support and the members for giving up their tables over the past 4 days of competition. President Rob Slater and his team were new to the Masters or hosting big events and the many ABSC-related terms & conditions which needed to be applied.  But they rose to the occasion, carried out all required tasks admirably and are to be congratulated on their efforts.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Masters in 2025.
